Knowledge Workers living in the Black Country
Knowledge workers are defined as people working in professional, managerial, scientific and technical occupations. The percentage of knowledge workers in the employed population is used as a benchmark indicator of the knowledge-intensity of residential communities. W1 wards are defined as wards where ‘knowledge workers’ make up more than 50% of the resident employed population; W2 wards are where ‘knowledge workers’ make up between 40% and 50% of the resident employed population; W3 wards are where ‘knowledge workers’ make up between 30% and 40% of the resident employed population and W4 wards are where ‘knowledge workers’ make up less than 30% of the resident employed population. In the Black Country only 4% of the population live in W1 wards; 14% in W2 wards and 26% in W3 wards. Therefore according to the 2001 Census 56% of the Black Country population live in ‘W4’ wards – communities where the great majority of people threaten to be left behind by the modern Knowledge Economy.
